Arc Raiders Mustard Boss Raid Guide for Fast Clears
#1
In Arc Raiders, the Matriarch—often nicknamed the “Mustard” or “Gas” boss—stands out as one of the most dangerous raid encounters. The fight is mostly defined by heavy area denial, shield cycling, and constant pressure from summoned ARC units. If your goal is fast clears rather than slow attrition, the entire encounter becomes a damage timing and positioning check rather than a raw DPS race.

This guide breaks down a practical speed-focused approach based on how most squads consistently melt her before the fight drags out.

Optimal Speedrun Loadout

Fast clears depend heavily on burst damage and armor penetration. The Matriarch’s outer plating is the real gatekeeping mechanic, so your loadout should be built around breaking it quickly.

Primary Weapon: Hullcracker (Rocket Launcher)
This is the most reliable option for stripping armor and forcing the boss into her vulnerable phase. Its high armor penetration makes it ideal for opening damage windows fast.

Ammunition: Heavy Rocket Supply (8+ stacks recommended)
Expect prolonged armor cycles if your timing is off, so bring more than you think you need. Running dry mid-phase will slow the entire raid.

Grenades: Wolfpack Grenades
These are essential for clearing summoned ARC units instantly. They prevent your team from being overwhelmed while focusing boss damage.

Augment: Tactical Mk. 2 or Looting Mk. 3

Tactical Mk. 2 helps reposition quickly when the arena becomes unsafe
Looting Mk. 3 is better for squads prioritizing extraction value after the kill
Phase 1: Secure Indoor Cover Immediately

The first mistake most teams make is fighting the Matriarch in open ground.

As soon as the encounter begins, move into any nearby enclosed structure—doorways, hallways, or compact interiors all work.

The boss relies heavily on:

Tracking missiles
Flashbang-style disruption attacks
Wide-area gas denial zones

Staying indoors reduces exposure to her vertical and tracking attacks, giving your team stable firing lanes while avoiding sudden wipes.

Phase 2: Wait Out the Shield Cycle

The Matriarch rotates between an invulnerable shield state and a damageable phase.

During the blue shield phase:

Do not waste rockets
Reload and reposition
Clear minor threats if necessary

When the shield drops, this is your burst window.

Immediately focus Hullcracker shots on her upper body or head region. This is what breaks her outer armor plates and exposes the red core beneath.

Speed runs depend on how quickly your squad recognizes and capitalizes on this window.

Phase 3: Burn the Exposed Core

Once the armor is removed, the fight becomes significantly simpler.

At this stage:

The red core becomes permanently damageable
Shield cycling becomes less punishing
Burst damage stacks effectively across the team

Even if she attempts to reapply shielding, core damage remains your priority. A coordinated squad can delete a large portion of her HP in one or two clean rotations here.

This is where most fast clears are decided.

Phase 4: Handle ARC Summons Efficiently

During the fight, the Matriarch will frequently deploy high-tier ARC reinforcements such as Rocketeers and Bombardier-type units.

If ignored, these adds will force your squad out of position and break your DPS rhythm.

Best approach:

Pre-throw Wolfpack Grenades at spawn points
Assign one player as “add control”
Do not let summons reach your cover position

The goal is simple: boss damage should never stop.

Phase 5: Maintain Safe Positioning Under Gas Pressure

Her “Mustard” gas attacks are not just damage—they also drain stamina and reduce mobility, making escape difficult if you panic.

To handle this:

Rotate between two indoor positions if needed
Avoid long straight-line retreats in open space
Never chase damage outside safe cover zones

Fast clears are about controlled aggression, not constant exposure.

Fast Extraction Strategy

Defeating the Matriarch in Arc Raiders results in high-value drops, but the fight does not end there.

Once she goes down:

Expect immediate aggression from nearby elite ARC units
Player Raiders may also converge due to audio and loot signals

To secure your rewards:

Drop a smoke grenade on the loot site
Loot only high-priority items first (Reactor-tier drops)
Rotate immediately toward extraction routes

Delaying here is the most common cause of “successful kill, failed raid.”

Fast clearing the Matriarch in Arc Raiders is less about survival and more about discipline. Teams that succeed consistently are the ones that:

Respect shield windows
Maintain indoor control
Delete adds instantly
Commit fully during core exposure phases

Once your squad syncs these timings, the boss stops feeling like a raid-ending threat and becomes a structured damage cycle you can reliably farm.
