The Betrayal Board: Intelligence Gathering in POE 1
#1
You enter a Transportation encounter. The target is Haku. You defeat his guards. You choose an option. Execute. Betray. Bargain. Your choice changes the board. In POE 1, Betrayal is a system of interlocking relationships. It is a puzzle. It is a strategy game. It is also incredibly rewarding. The Betrayal board generates safehouses. Safehouses drop unique crafting materials. Breachstones. Scarabs. Essences. Pure breachstones. Running Betrayal efficiently requires planning. You cannot simply kill everything. You must manipulate the board. You must decide who to trust and who to betray.

The Betrayal system has four divisions. Transportation. Fortification. Research. Intervention. Each division has a captain. Each division has members. You encounter these members in maps. You defeat them. You interrogate them. You gain intelligence for their division. When a division reaches one hundred intelligence, you run its safehouse. The safehouse contains chests. The chests drop rewards based on the members. A member from Intervention drops Scarabs. A member from Research drops Breachstones. A member from Fortification drops Essences. The best members are in Research. They drop Chayula Breachstones. Chayula Breachstones are valuable. You want Research safehouses. You prioritize Research members.

The relationships matter. Members have rivalries and friendships. You exploit these. You betray a friend to move them to a different division. You execute a rival to remove them from the board. You bargain for information. The board is dynamic. It changes every map. You keep a mental model. You track who is where. You plan your next move. The system is complex. It rewards study. The community has created cheat sheets. Images showing optimal board states. You follow the guide. You set up your board. You run Research safehouses repeatedly. You generate pure Chayula Breachstones. You sell them. You profit.

Path of Exile 3.28 Currency’s Betrayal system was introduced in 2018. It has been refined over time. The mastermind fight was reworked. The rewards were balanced. The board interface was improved. Betrayal is now a core endgame mechanic. It appears in every league. The Atlas passive tree has nodes for Betrayal. You spec into these nodes. You increase intelligence gain. You add additional members. You add additional rewards. The synergy is powerful. You combine Betrayal with maps. You run maps with Betrayal missions. You build intelligence quickly. You run safehouses frequently. The currency flows.

The Betrayal board is not for everyone. It requires attention. It requires memory. It requires planning. Some players hate it. They find it tedious. They ignore it. They sell their Betrayal missions to other players. That is fine. POE 1 offers many paths. You choose your content. You specialize in what you enjoy. But if you want to craft your own gear, Betrayal is essential. It unlocks bench crafts. It drops Vorici chromes. It drops Hillock quality. The rewards are unique. They cannot be obtained elsewhere. Learn the board. Manipulate the relationships. Run the safehouses. The intelligence is waiting. The rewards are waiting. Execute. Betray. Bargain. Choose wisely. The board is watching.
